Resurrecting a dead brand can be a real challenge as it has expectations from a market that has long known the brand and might just feel nostalgic about it. Sony Ericsson did just that with a couple of handsets laying claim to the Walkman pedigree that started during the cassette days and extending to the W line of feature phones launched a good five years ago and ending with the W995 released last summer of 2009.

One of them is the Sony Ericsson Zylo which is a mid-priced ticket to the Walkman heritage. Not that the Walkman brand recalls any glorious days of Sony Ericsson music phones considering that Nokia was fast enough to overcome anything that Sony Ericsson throws at their markets, but seeing a handset with the famous Walkman name and symbols can’t help but trigger some nostalgia when the model created the music phone category.
This time, with a youthful market in its sights, the slider Zylo comes in different body colors – jazz black, chacha silver and swing pink.

Walkman Features

Starting with a stereo FM radio with RDS no music phone can be without, the Zylo boasts of the Walkman Player 4.0 which supports playback of high fidelity lossless codec FLAC on top of the usual MP3, eAAC+ and WAV files.
But what was Sony thinking not putting the music industry 3.5mm headphone jack that could have allowed users to experience high fidelity music that only comes with wired high fidelity headphones? This is one real shame about this otherwise capable music phone. No music phone is really worth bothering about where you can’t use your favorite Hi-FI headsets.

For seasoned audiophiles, the Sony Ericsson Zylo can be dismissed but for the younger crowd with no audiophilic attitudes, the A2DP wireless support should be good enough. They are usually your social networking crowds who will be delighted at being able to do social networking while glued to their stereo listening on the Zylo.
Mid-Tier Phone Features

When closed, the slider Zylo measures 103 x 52 x 11.5 mm and weighs a light 115g. It’s a 3G feature phone on the dual band UMTS (900/ 2100) and a 2G on the quad band GSM (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900). Data connectivity gets Class 10 GPRS/EDGE for data speeds of up to 236.8 Kbps on 2G and HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 2.0 Mbps on 3G.
There’s no GPS or WiFi typical of mid-priced handsets but you still get local high speed data connectivity from Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired mode, respectively.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo images with a standard 3.2 megapixel camera with geo tagging and video calling but you get no LED flash or autofocus which is also a common feature in average mid-tier handsets. Video recording is likewise basic. Its display can be considered average for a mid-priced handset with its 2.6-inch TFT LCD display with mere QVGA resolution and 256k colors.

It gets a scratch resistant surface and an accelerometer for auto rotate viewing convenience. Onboard memory comes with a decent 260 MB with microSD external memory expandability for up to 16 GB. Its Li-Ion battery yields a disappointing talk time of 4 hours on 2G and 340 hours on standby time.
